SAN ANTONIO (CBS) — A San Antonio doctor is offering a prescription to treat male pattern baldness in men who are unable to maintain their hair. The prescription is for the medication to be taken daily.
According to, a San Antonio doctor prescribed Propecia and Finasteride for male pattern baldness.
"I was on it for 6 months, and I started losing my hair. Now it's off and on and I have to get it out of my system," Dr. Daniel P. Mavroulakos, who treats male pattern baldness at San Antonio Clinic, told CBS News.
Mavroulakos said he has not tried finasteride or Propecia in his lifetime. "I haven't tried Propecia for a while, but it has been very successful. I am very happy with my decision," he said.
In addition to the Propecia, Dr. P. M. Mavroulakos said there are other treatments that may help patients maintain hair growth, such as, or.
"I have a lot of people that have been on Finasteride for several months and have noticed an improvement in their hair loss," he said.
Dr. Daniel Mavroulakos said the hair loss is due to the combination of the medications, which also increases the amount of the hormone Finasteride in the body. For example, in a study involving more than 200 men with prostate cancer, a high dose of Finasteride resulted in an 84 percent increase in prostate cancer incidence.
The men who took Propecia had a lower risk of getting prostate cancer. Mavroulakos said he hopes to have a second treatment for hair loss, like the prescription, to help reduce the risk.
"It's definitely a good idea to try to prevent or slow down the progression of the disease," he said. "I think it would be wise to start with a hair transplant as there's a lot of research and there's some studies looking at it and a lot of people who are going to the hospital for a hair transplant are going to be able to stop."
The prostate cancer study that was done by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) was the first clinical study involving the use of Propecia in male pattern baldness. The study was stopped because of the prostate cancer scare.
Mavroulakos told CBSNews.com that he had no idea the results were in the study, but said they were a good first step.
"The prostate cancer study was positive," he said.
Mavroulakos said his doctor had prescribed Propecia for hair loss to his patients.
"I had been a little concerned about the side effects," he said. "I was concerned about the fact that it was a little bit of an aching area. I had heard some people say the side effects are very bad and that they can get into their system.
"But I have a lot of people that have been on Propecia for a while. I can't really talk about them," he said.
Mavroulakos said he believes it would be an excellent opportunity to try another treatment, like finasteride.
"I think the benefit of having the treatment is going to be much more effective in terms of preventing prostate cancer," he said. "It will be much easier to prevent and treat the disease."
The doctor will have to see a dermatologist or a board-certified doctor who will determine whether a patient can safely use the medication.
The results of the study will be released in the fourth quarter of 2017.
The results of the study showed that finasteride has been shown to be effective in treating hair loss.
"This study showed that finasteride was effective in treating hair loss, and that it could be used as a first-line treatment for hair loss," the results of the study said. "It also showed that there was a slight reduction in hair loss and that there was no significant difference between the treatment and placebo group."
Mavroulakos said the results have been consistent in that they show that the study showed that there is no significant difference between the treatment and placebo group, but he hopes it will be published soon.
"I am a big fan of the results. It is the best study that I have ever done," he said. "I am very proud of the results.
