Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. These factors may affect how you should use finasteride tablets.

Male pattern baldness:Finasteride tablets, 5 mg, should be taken one to three days before or one to three months after a male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) diagnosis. If you are taking finasteride for hair loss, you may need to take an additional 5 mg per day to ensure the medication is used as directed by your doctor. Your doctor may adjust the dose or recommend that you start finasteride tablets, 5 mg, on an empty stomach.

Possible androgenetic alopecia:Male pattern baldness is an uncommon type of androgenetic alopecia. If you have male pattern baldness, it usually occurs at the crown and the anterior mid-scalp area. The diagnosis of male pattern baldness requires screening for the presence of at least one of the following:

  • An enlarged prostate (benign prostatic hyperplasia, BPH);
  • Balding of the scalp (hair loss with or without balding);
  • A decrease or loss of hearing (temporary decrease in hearing);
  • A loss of vision;
  • Decreased sexual ability; or
  • A personal or family history of an enlarged prostate.

Balding of the scalp:Balding of the scalp may occur in men who use finasteride tablets, 5 mg, to treat male pattern baldness. This occurs as a result of the decreased testosterone levels in the scalp that has taken effect. If you are taking finasteride tablets for hair loss, you may need to take an additional 5 mg per day to ensure the medication is used as directed by your doctor.

A decrease or loss of sight:Finasteride tablets, 5 mg, can be used to treat benign prostate hyperplasia. If you notice your hair loss is slowing down, especially in the early stages of the hair growth phase, you should stop taking finasteride tablets, 5 mg, immediately.

Male pattern baldness may affect your hair: Finasteride tablets, 5 mg, may affect your hair growth. This is more likely to occur in men who have previously had male pattern hair loss, especially if you have previously had male pattern hair loss at some time or other, or are of Asian descent (or European descent). Finasteride tablets, 5 mg, may also affect hair growth in men who are of African-American, Asian, or European descent. If you are not sure, talk to your doctor about whether finasteride tablets, 5 mg, is safe for you.

Finasteride is used to treat men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and male pattern hair loss, also called androgenetic alopecia. BPH is caused by an enlarged prostate. Men with BPH usually have difficulty urinating, a decreased flow of urination, hesitation at the beginning of urination, and a need to get up at night to urinate. Finasteride will make these symptoms less severe and reduce the chance that prostate surgery will be needed. It may be used alone or in combination with other medicines such as an alpha-blocker to treat BPH. For men with hair loss, finasteride will increase the number of scalp hairs but will not increase the amount of body hair.

Finasteride blocks the action of an enzyme called 5-alpha-reductase. This enzyme changes testosterone to another hormone that causes the prostate to grow or hair loss in males. It will increase testosterone levels in the body, which decreases prostate size and increases hair growth on the scalp. The effect of finasteride on the prostate and scalp will only last as long as the medicine is taken. When it is stopped, the prostate begins to grow again and the hair will be lost.

My local hair loss clinic has not been effective for my hair loss. My hair has come back strong and long and it's been in good shape. My dad is from a family of doctors and I want to know if it's something that should be treated at home.

I've been trying to buy a supply of 1mg tablets but the wholesalers are so slow to respond, they don't respond well to tablets. I'm concerned about the supply chain issues and wondering if there's something else I should try?

Great question! I'm a 63 year old singlebara person with a hereditary male pattern hair loss. My dad is a chemist and I've been trying to buy 1mg tablets but he doesn't respond well to them. He's worried about the supply chain issues and looking for other options.

Excellent question!

This is exactly what I was looking for. The 1mg tablets were all supplied by the wholesaler and it's been working great for me. I was also trying to buy 1mg tablets but they were all in different strengths and I was told I'd have to take them again for testing. My question is, does anyone know of a similar product? Thanks in advance
